I’d intended to post this forever ago, not long after Bobby made that video of The Golden Girls set to the trailer music from Anna Karenina. In talking with Bobby, I posited that the piece of music was exactly the right length and crafted as such to perfectly fit the rhythms of most movie trailers. So obviously I paired it with The Hours, and it was perfect.

Because they are just two boys who are nothing more than names and faces to me, I have nothing bad to say about Dylan and Brad. I can only judge them based on appearances and headlines because that’s all I’ve been given. And they are a cute couple, aren’t they? Just look! I’m happy for them! I really am. I want to stress that a few times because it’s important. I’m happy for them. Because they went through high school and were able to not only decipher a piece of themselves, but to share it. Fearlessly. They found each other and held each other and kissed each other and Instagrammed the hell out of it to the point that enough of the school thought it was cute enough to vote for them. It’s easy to joke about how it won’t last once they’re in college, or that a high school romance is nothing but simply that, but predicting their future is of less than zero importance to this story. So let’s not.

Let’s talk about how seeing their story pop up on site after site has made me lose that nice punch of happiness and pride that came after first looking at their photo. Let’s talk about how I’m finding myself unable to ignore the unspoken element in all these stories which is that it’s easier to be the first gay couple to be voted “cutest” by your high school when you’re both white and male and good looking and in one of the most affluent counties in the country.

These boys went to Carmel High School. In the 2010-2011 school year, there were 395 students in the senior class. My guess is that there were probably a handful of other kids in that class who may not have had the best hair or the best smiles or the best clothes or even an Instagram account but held each other just as tightly outside their houses and felt something they had never felt before who wonder why no one who looks like them or acts like them ever gets a Huffington Post article.

It’s a process, of course. And it’s great that the youngs love the gays. And it’s great that Dylan and Brad were in the yearbook together. But sometimes I just hope the quieter, less photogenic ones know they’re in the exact same club. That even if they don’t pay the dues, know the pledge, or even show up, that they deserve just as many notes and just as many reblogs and just as much happiness.

This is good. Good Guy Writes Good Thing.

I had a super difficult time sitting through Fances Ha, which blew, because I’d felt so excited going in. A movie! For me to like! We’re all going to like it! And celebrate it together! Being young! Black and white! Good fonts! Feeling directionless! Let’s roll!

And yet fifteen minutes in, and then thirty minutes in, and then forty five minutes in, I found myself wanting to stand up or read something on my phone or take a lap around the theater. Anything. Not even, “Ugh, this character!” or, “Ugh, this script!” just like, actively not wanting to participate in the cycle of portraying people in their 20s as these flailing, autistic creatures anymore.

Have I or my friends experienced the sensation of having an uncomfortable conversation that, in retrospect, we probably could have handled better? Of course. We’re alive. Have I spent too much money on a thing that turned out to be frivolous and not worth it? Almost always. But I also manage to buy toothpaste and pay my bills and be kind to people without leeching their life force out of them and I’m just tired. I’m tired of art hitting this same note that’s “It’s so hard! To have air-dried hair and clothes that aren’t from the mall and a friend with a boyfriend!” when the reality of it is that that’s like, the baseline. There are icky, wormy, beautiful things that happen when you’re not explaining the surface-level, breathing-in-and-out-status stuff to your audience, and I wish anyone anywhere would take up that work.

And maybe it’s just not for me. Maybe everything geared toward and written by people in their twenties isn’t sent down from some heaven cloud for Christine specifically, and that’s something I still haven’t wrapped my head around in a meaningful way, but I wish someone would write a single character that wasn’t all elbows. Someone capable of making a mistake, but maybe capable of being goddamn sympathetic and smart and great too.

This was like Garden State dressed up as Manhattan.

Joe Being Defensive of a Movie He Loves Alert, and Christine writes great and thoughtful things so this is excellent and a good read, but this: “Someone capable of making a mistake, but maybe capable of being goddamn sympathetic and smart and great too” is kind of exactly what I got from this movie and this character specifically, and I think it’s wild that Christine said those very words to describe what she thought the movie was not. Opinions!
