Bachelorette will likely suffer from comparisons to Bridesmaids. Here’s a raunchy lady comedy, but there was a raunchy lady comedy! And that one came out first! Having said that, writer-director Leslye Headland and her team accomplish more in 94 minutes than Paul Feig did in 125, and I think that’s saying something.
I think I agree! There’s a stretch in the middle where the film begins to wallow in its nihilism (and also where it looks like each of the women is going to get “solved” via either mansplaining or getting fucked or both), but the last half hour picks up significantly, and pretty soon we’re racing through Kirsten Dunst Comedy Reaction-Shot Boot Camp and arriving at some fairly mature conclusions. And for a movie that’s a good 10x nastier than Bridesmaids, it managed to be less showy about grossing the audience out. Really loved it (especially Dunst, enough to end our 10-year feud that mostly has to do with Spider-Man and dumping Jake Gyllenhaal because he wasn’t fun enough).
I’m hoping they can avoid the poop-in-a-dress gag.
