The Draw: The fall of 1991 was the year I became besotted with the pop charts. Every Thursday, while I waited for my parents to pick me up from my middle school’s afterschool program, I read the weekly singles countdown in the newspaper, checking on the progress of hits like “Blowing Kisses in the Wind” (yay!) and “Set the Night to Music” (boo!). More than anything, I remember the progress of PM Dawn’s “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss,” a trippy hip-hop song that sounded very “other” to my 12 year-old ears. What were these lyrics? What was this sleepy rapping? What were these velour muumuus that Prince Be was rocking in the video?
