I’m fascinated with the narrative of the media’s complaints. She’s rich! She’s aware that she’s rich! She doesn’t really speak for a generation! The show is too white! Like, no one would write anything about the socio-cultural aspects of, say, Eastbound & Down, even though there’s nothing…
I’m not going to be the guy to defend the socio-whatever implications of Eastbound & Down but it didn’t call itself Male Identity Crisis & Down so maybe that’s why it didn’t get that coverage? Girls called itself Girls so people are writing about what it says about Girls and what kinds of Girls. I don’t love it either, but girlfriend was asking for it.
rachel getting married takes place in suburban connecticut and girls takes place in nyc. jenna’s gripe was with the narrow evolution of the new york-centric female ensemble cast, not with the prevalence of white people in things in general.
